As we went to do our artistic activity of the day, I realized I did not have an art smock for my son. Since I had already promised the activity, I knew I had to move fast on this one and I came up with an art smock in less than a minute. Luckily, I had a dress shirt on hand that I had picked up at our local thrift store and quickly cut it to make it work. Here’s how you can make your very own!

Equipment Needed
Old men’s dress shirt with small collar size*
Sharp scissors
2-4 Safety Pins
- Cut off length of sleeves to just below child’s elbows, remove high collar on the shirt, cut off length of shirt if needed (so no tripping!)
- Roll sleeves up twice and secure with safety pins
- Put child’s hands through sleeves with buttons at their back, button collar button around child’s neck & do up 1-2 buttons on the back to keep it on.
- Voilà! You’re ready for paint.
*You can measure your child’s neck in advance and take your measurement to the thrift store to measure against collars to ensure a good fit.
