I don’t know about you, but I love a good road trip. For starters, we have such a great country to explore. Second, there are so many great memories to be made out on the open road. And third, it can be an affordable way to make that summer holiday happen.

Here are three great adventures to get your mind wandering and maybe inspire your next trip: Quebec City, Haliburton and Tofino.

Tofino, British Columbia. 

Let’s start in the west. Want to go where picturesque and adventurous meet? Hang 10 with the family at Canada’s surf capital – Tofino. Get your family on a ferry from Vancouver to Nanaimo and drive along the Pacific Rim Highway for truly breathtaking views of mountains and lakes and the rainforest. The area is also known for its trees, which grow in spectacular sizes. Some are believed to be 1000 years old.  

Haliburton, Ontario. 

Though it’s not too far from the big city, it feels like it’s a world away. You can feel good about taking the scenic route, winding your way though a number of smaller cities, towns and villages (just be sure to hit some of the incredible ice cream parlours along the way). Whether you stay for the day or rent a cottage, don’t miss Webers in Orillia, a Canadian burger landmark since 1963. 

Quebec City, Quebec.

Don’t wait to hit the city limits for a taste of the culture. There are countless francophone villages on your way into the old city to soak up the history, food and language. The drive is magnifique as you roll through lush countryside but not nearly as impressive as the final destination: old Quebec City, a city full of history, architecture, cobblestone streets and endless charm.

Before You Hit the Road

Of course, you’ll want to make sure the car is well stocked and you’re prepared before you pull out of the driveway. Be sure to bring music, making playlists the whole family will enjoy. Don’t forget your GPS and bring an old-school map so the kids can follow along. You’ll also want to put on your sunscreen (yes, even in the car), stock the first aid kit and bring snacks. Lots of snacks.
