Packing for an Epic Road Trip

We’ve been having a great season with our RV touring through Alberta and British Columbia. Since we were having such a rocking time, we decided to take on our next challenge – a 7,800+ km road trip. We are travelling from our current home in Alberta back to Ontario to visit our newest Inspired Kid – Little J, and attend my brother’s wedding.

You may think we’re crazy. We may well be to undertake such a journey with 2 kids and a border collie in tow.

For me, this is such a throwback to days of old. Doug and I used to take road trips all the time – camping at Turkey Point, a hike in Algonquin, or just something to do. We would throw all camping gear in the trunk and just take off.

These days, each item that is currently packed has been carefully selected to ensure the most optimum weight in the trailer. There certainly isn’t any extra room (or weight) to add anything that isn’t an essential. 

One Ply, No Thanks

When we first started RVing, I was completely horrified with the bathroom tissue suggested. On display at our RV dealer was this sad one-ply “perfect for breaking down” in your holding tank. Perfect for the holding tank, sure, but would it be good for delicate areas and small bums? I wasn’t so sure. This launched my search for a better way!

Cottonelle Wet & Dry Routine

We’ve been trying out the Cottonelle Wet & Dry Routine for the past two weeks. It has been an eye opening experience. Using many diaper wipes between the small people in my house, using a FreshCare flushable wipe makes sense. The small travel “to-go” packages are excellent to tuck in your purse just in case. With one preschooler and a toddler, you never quite know what pinch you might find yourself in to. I had several situations in and outside the home where I was able to employ a little FreshCare flusable cleansing cloth action and save the day. 

The flushable cleansing cloths are also septic safe. This typically means they are safe for the RV holding tank also. It is best to always test your wipe or toilet paper when in doubt! We were a little cynical, and also have had a recent sewer debacle are our house, so we put the toilet paper and FreshCare wipes to the test in a bowl of water. We found they did break down quickly, as advertised. The only thing left to do was to load them in our laundry basket and into the RV for happy trails.
