Big Girl Room

We have now officially renovated and painted every room in our house. This was no small feat. We literally ripped it wall from wall and ceiling from ceiling over the past five years. Yes, there are some areas that need a little more TLC. (I don’t think you’re ever REALLY done, are you?)

So you can imagine my husband’s reaction when I told him I wanted to re-paint one of the rooms.

In the midst of the all the drywall dust, floor tile grouting and cabinet hanging over the past year, our little mountain baby grew into a toddler.

That feat of time required changing her room to make it more toddler friendly, and a space she could continue to grow into. In my opinion, a quick coat of paint is one of the easiest ways to change a room along with a few accessories and a little fabric.

Did I mention we also have a little paint love affair going on with Benjamin Moore? Specifically, we have been using the ben & ME paint throughout our house – we’ve painted the living room, basement, bathrooms, and bedrooms.

3 Tips that Were Crucial from the How-To Guide:

Preparation: We had a hole in our wall from too enthusiastic rocking in the rocking chair that had to be repaired before we started. Doug took care of that, while I wiped down our very dirty baseboards and taped them to get ready for the cut-in. We also removed all furniture from the room (except the crib which doesn’t fit through the door), and took down the curtains & curtain rod, and removed the electrical plug outlet covers.

No Muss and No Fuss: With two young children in tow, we don’t have time to mess around with cleaning our tools. Most paint projects have to spread out over the course of a weekend for us to complete them. We find tray liners and a paint tray storage bag help us be able to quickly set up and get back to paint the second coat quickly.

Take a Break: Painting is a big job, and even though blog posts make it look simple & fun, it also takes time. Our project took us the majority of two days to paint a 10′ x 11′ room with frequent breaks to entertain children, watch crib yoga, and have snacks.

The Results

 

The ben & ME bag was very easy to use. We both enjoyed all of the tips in the how-to Guide, and we tried a few new moves too – like lint rolling our paint roller before use. Now that the room is complete, I feel the room is a lot warmer than it was previously. The walls are ready to rock this new toddler phase, and the neutral colour will serve Ms P again in future when we change to a new colour scheme and big girl bed.
