Planting the Spring Blooms & Seasonal Allergies
The weather is getting warmer, and nature is in full bloom. On the farm it means, we are planting seeds and shrubs in the ground right after the frost free day (usually May long weekend). Although most of the shrubs come in the mail without blooms, as soon as we add water, poof they are off to the races. Our grove of poplar trees burst into bloom which means all the green “worms” are everywhere to be found. And my poor husbands eyes start watering and itching. I’ve come to anticipate this – along with when my own seasonal allergies kick in (when everything dies in the fall).
Don’t let allergies dampen your spirits- it’s time to take action. Allergies can really interfere with your quality of life, and you deserve better! Luckily when it comes to dealing with seasonal sniffles, you have options. Below are some helpful tips for a sneeze-free allergy season.
Have your allergy medications ready
Have your allergy medication at hand before the first signs of symptoms. Antihistamines can help decrease sneezing, runny nose and itchy-watery eyes. Claritin® Allergy + Sinus Extra Strength gives you 24-hour non-drowsy relief from bothersome allergy symptoms caused by pollen, ragweed, grass, dust, pets and moulds.
Air conditioners are your friend
If plants (trees, grass, pollen and ragweed) are at fault for your allergy symptoms, control the air inside by keeping the windows in your home and car closed. This is a tough one for us – as in Alberta we don’t have air conditioning units and we cool the house by opening all the windows at night. Try to avoid opening the ones in your bedroom if possible. Ceiling fans can help move the air around instead.
Give your furry pal a brush or trim
Dogs and cats that have been outside can track pollen into your home. Make a habit of brushing your pet before you head back inside to keep pollen out. We like to shave our border collie to his summer look which helps cut down on mud & pollen tracked in in early spring. It also helps reduce the winter coat shed which allows us to keep other allergens outside of our house.
Clear your head
For some allergy sufferers, symptoms can include sinus pressure and sinus congestion. Make sure you’re picking up the right allergy medication for you. AERIUS® Dual Action 12hr is an antihistamine that delivers multi-symptom allergy relief for 12 hours, including relief from nasal congestion and stuffiness.
Take yourself off lawn duty
Keeping the grass short is a good idea for reducing grass allergens – but don’t cut it yourself! Enlist help cutting and weed whipping your property from friends and family or hire a lawn service to help. I’m ready to buy animals to help us with this chores, cutting acres of lawn is no easy task that takes the majority of the day!
How will you spring into action this year to keep allergy symptoms in check?
