Educational shows for rainy summer days
We’re in for a wet, wet summer. And for us, a day inside always includes screen time. But that doesn’t mean that the kids are zoned out in front of meaningless reruns. There are TONS of educational shows for rainy summer days on Netflix.
When I get to choose a new show for the kids, and I want to pick something educational, I have a few go-to subjects. I want them to learn about reading and language, STEM topics, music and arts, and generally becoming a better human.
Luckily there are amazing shows right now for all these areas.
Words and Language
I’ve always loved words, so these shows hold a special place in my heart. I’m dating myself by saying that Read-a-Long was my favourite when I was little, and Reading Rainbow was also not to be missed (long before PVRs). For words and language, here are some of the current favourites at our house:
There is another show that rides the between language learning and STEM, and we love it. If you like history, art, language, music and problem-solving skills, you need to see it.
STEM and Nature
What about STEM and the natural world?
Below you’ll find a great choice of shows for the little ones and also for kids that are older. Of course, they are also great for kids at heart.
Music and Singing
While you’re looking for educational shows for rainy summer days, don’t forget to add music to the mix. Learning to play an instrument can aid in literacy, which can translate into improved academic results for kids. And kids who love music grow into kids who want to play music. So bring on the love. Try these shows to get your kids hooked.
Learning to Play Nice
Lastly, there is a lot to learn about being a good person. There are some amazing shows right now that teach empathy, check http://loftypm.com, modulating emotions and other character-building traits like grit and resilience.
This list has both. For empathy, inclusion and more, you can’t beat Julie Andrews and The Green Room. For character, I think stories about an underdog rising to a challenge can’t be beat.
Summer is long and there are so many fun things to see and do. But when it’s raining outside, screen time can be fun, and educational.
