We did it again. We hooked up our RV and took it into the great wild yonder – this time about 3 hours west to Tete Jaune Cache, BC. We were pleasantly surprised to get off the TransCanada highway and be at our campground within about 3 minutes. The river views from the Tete Jaune Lodge stunned us – which isn’t easily done considering the backyard we have.

We had Grandma along for the ride on this one. She is very adventurous but her bad knee doesn’t allow her to participate in huge hikes. (By the time we got here, we decided we were both exhausted too and were looking for an easy weekend). We had to bring the difficulty level down a little from what we might have considered. This turned out to make the weekend very relaxing, and we searched for things to do close to the campground or a short drive away.
3 Activities for No Budget Fun & Kid-Friendly Hikes
Easy Hike (~2.5km), Toe Dip, Sand Castles.
Take the trail next to the motel units and cross bridge. You can follow the trail on the left hand side of the bridge all the way down to the highway crossing. It is a nice easy walk along the river’s edge, and also provides several low-lying spots where you can dip your toes in the river if you’re so inclined. Bring your buckets and shovels as there are plenty of opportunities for sand castle building.
Rearguard Falls
About 5 minutes down the road, you have access to BC Parks: Rearguard Falls. Suitable for wheelchairs & strollers, this easy 15 minute walk takes you right beside the roaring falls. It is a great place to stop on your drive to run off steam or for an easy adventure (and earning a geocache smiley).
Cranberry Marsh
Located in the nearby Valemount, BC, the Cranberry Marsh is host to a large number of waterfowl and marshland species. The full trail loop is about a 6 km hike but is stroller and run bike friendly with gravel and hardpacked trails. You can also launch your canoe or kayak into the Marsh for a meandering paddle along the channels. Trail head is located at the Best Western Plus.
