4 Thrifty Ways to Stay Healthy
With recent health challenges, I find myself at a crossroads to revamping how I keep my family healthy (and myself!). Every routine deserves a check in now and again, as we gain more knowledge and learn what works well, or does not. One of my friends reminded me – when we know better, we do better.
Although our cold prevention routine does work, it’s hard to fit into our budget, when I spend $50-70 each month on vitamins. Within our family, every kind is needed from women’s to men’s to kids. Add in additional supplements in winter, and it adds up fast. Here’s a few other ways I have come up with that help our health:
4 Thrifty Ways to Stay Healthy
- Get more vitamin D
Grab the dog, or a friend and get moving. A simple 10-20 minute walk around the block will give you the vitamin D you need, and boost your creative thought. I frequently strap on my iPhone and will make phone calls to catch up with friends and family as I go. - If you’re drinking juice – choose 100% juice.
We stock up on case loads of 100% unsweetened, pure apple juice when it goes on sale for less than .85 cents a 1L container. When carrots are on sale, we’ll buy a big bag and juice them. Or pick off the fruit that’s on sale and make a smoothie! My kids are even into water with fruit infused in them overnight. - A balanced diet makes a difference.
Lay off the fast food, and make homemade meals. I recently filled my freezer full of nutritious quick meals that I just have to throw in the crockpot or vegetables too. This made a big difference on how many meals per week we are ordering. It also boosts nutrition and helps you eat a better portion size. If you need ideas, grab a freezer meal book from the library, or check out Pinterest. - Choose a better multivitamin.
