For the record, I’m not an early morning riser. I tend more towards late night owl. Since having kids though, I have been thrust into those early morning hours with morning feeds. I found it’s actually a terrific time of day to get things done and start my day off on the right foot. So since then, I have been tending more towards morning.
Mr J does too. I’m not sure how he has the internal sensor that tells him I am awake. The moment my eyelids even look like they might flutter open, he’s right next to me. I relish the early morning cuddles as he crawls into bed to whisper to me. In the interest of letting dad sleep (who remains a night owl), we get up and get dressed quietly and make our way towards the kitchen.
This is where the magic happens. Mr J gets my undivided attention and we celebrate with a date. Typically, he chatters my ear off about all things and I try to keep it quiet enough that Dad can still sleep. His little sister has started towards the early morning life too, so now I have two little magpies to keep entertained.
Here’s a couple of activities that we typically do together as “dates” that you can try too for your early morning bird!
Early Morning Mother & Son Dates
Donut Date
On the very early weekend mornings, we silently sneak out of the house to go and visit our local coffee store. We sit with a donut or two and talk about what is happening for the next week. I usually learn a lot of how Mr J is thinking and feeling. He in turn loves it because he gets to choose anything he wants on the menu (except coffee, of course!)
Cereal Date
On weekday mornings, we head to the kitchen for a bowl of cereal and conversation. One of our favourites is Rice Krispies. The snap, crackle, and pop sounds of Rice Krispies when milk is added is not only nostalgic for me, it also makes Mr J smile when his cereal talks to him.
Rice Krispies Original Cereal is made with the goodness of a simple grain and no artificial colours or flavours, making it a fun part of a nutritional breakfast. Rice Krispies cereal is fat free and provides a source of 8 essential nutrients, including Vitamin D. I love it because it is so simple – just add milk and a few berries.
Dessert for Later Date
If we are feeling very adventurous (or it is REALLY early), we make a dessert for dinner that evening. Head over to our Pinterest board of Sweet Stuff for a little inspiration. The key to this one is to lay the ingredients out ahead the night before to ensure you don’t bang all the drawers and cupboards. Sshhh!
Crispy Craft
Items Needed- Rice Krispies, glue, colouring book page
Grab your favourite colouring book or print off a colouring sheet from the Internet. Add a little glue and this craft is a cinch. Add Rice Krispies around your favourite drawing to make your very own Crispy Craft. (Note: use non-toxic glue if your child will eat the Krispies straight off the page – I know mine do).
