Whenever someone asks me for guidance on nutrition, how they can feel healthier, or how to eat better, one of the first questions that I go to is: “how much water are you drinking?” And, if they are having issues, the answer is typically: “I could drink more.”
Water is so important, and completely undervalued in our fast-paced society. Meals are fast, sometime nutritious, pop is everywhere, powdered juice crystals come in convenience packaging… we have come up with more than enough reasons not to drink water.
But, our bodies are approximately 60% water, our brains are 70% water, and our lungs are a whopping 90% water. Plain and simple: we need water to survive.
What Can Water Do For You?
- Keeps you feeling full, controls your appetite
- Reduces appearance of pimples and flushes toxins from your skin
- Hydration helps to relieve pain, and is a better value than pain killers
- Keeps digestion flowing
Water: What Counts?
We are commonly told that eight 8-ounce glasses of water is adequate. This is the 8×8 Rule. But what else counts as water intake?
- Herbal tea
- Fruit – watermelon is around 90% water
- Vegetables – like celery, cucumber
- Smoothies, milk, soup, and even oatmeal
Last week I had the pleasure of learning more about the Strauss Water Bar. If you haven’t heard of this product before, you need to check it out! This system helps to debunk my perceived availability of filtered, inexpensive, eco-friendly, non-bottled water. Although I am lucky enough to drink delicious tap water in many different Canadian cities, there are more than enough places that could benefit from the Strauss Water Bar!
What Makes the Water Bar So Great?
These water bars put the sexy in hydration. Mostly because they replace any need to drink bottled water.
Bottled water lasts approximately 700 years in a landfill.
Toronto, ON consumes an estimated 100 million plastic bottles a year.
35% of these bottles are NOT recycled.
The Strauss Water Bar also has a triple water filtration and purification process. This kills 99.9% of micro-organisms and bacteria. Here’s the best part: the filtration process maintains essential mineral elements in the water that we need (like calcium and magnesium)! The Strauss Water Bar hooks directly to your water system at home and delivers boiling, hot, and cold water at the touch of your finger.
Strauss also wins serious energy efficiency points as well. The water bar is more energy efficient than a kettle, and has an energy-saving mode.
Something like this could definitely help increase my water consumption. How do you increase yours?
