Whether you save your iPhone for diverting tantrums in public or your child has their very own iPad, there is no denying that technology can make for a fantastic educational tool. Miss O has been using iPhones, iPods and iPads since she was about a year old. Although we don’t use them all that often (I’d say about two hours per week in total), they have taught her a number of things. She also knows how to use the iPad better than most people I know!
Miss O has acquired a collection of excellent apps in the last year. Some are free, some are paid (and worth it!). I’ve made a list of her favourites for you including prices and which devices they work on. I’m sure your kids will love some of these apps for toddlers as much as she does! Simply click the app image to take you right to the App Store. Note: Prices are in Canadian dollars.

Animal Zoo Interactive Flash Cards

Devices: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch
This is a great app for learning all about different types of animals and the noises they make. Miss O learned many of her animal noises from this app. The one downside is that according to this app, rabbits say, “whoopee!” which made Easter very interesting this year…
Sago Mini Forest Flyer

Miss O loves this app. She flies the little bird all over the forest, meeting new friends and exploring new adventures on the way. There is no wrong way to play this app as it is all about dragging the little bird around the screen, exploring everything you find. Paying for it also means there are no ads for her to click!

Color, Paint, Create!

Devices: iPad Only
Fisher-Price has a huge selection of excellent free apps. Many of them are designed to work with their various toys and gadgets – this is one of them. However, all of their apps work fantastically without the gadgets – each app has the option at the start to select if you are using the toy or not. This app is all about colouring – Miss O’s favourite thing to do. After they colour in each picture, it plays a little song & video.
Fisher-Price: See ‘n Say

Everyone remembers the classic See ‘n Say toy from their childhood. It has now been reimagined for iDevices! There are 12 different animals. Kids can either spin to land on a random animal or they can select a specific animal. Once an animal is selected, it plays a short clip telling you something about that animal. Miss O pretty much just watches the cat videos…
Goodnight Safari

This is an interactive storybook all about safari animals getting ready for bed. It’s very mellow with peaceful music. Kids have to help the animals meet up with their parents to go to sleep. Toca Boca apps tend to be quite popular and they have a variety of themes. Miss O loves this one as well as the Christmas Hair Salon (free!). It’s also great because it’s one of those apps where you can do nothing wrong – it’s simply a free-play app.
Paint Sparkles Draw – My First Colouring Book HD
Price: Free
Devices: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch
Miss O loves any app that lets her colour. This one definitely has the potential to click on ads and other in-app purchases so it may drive you bonkers after a while. Miss O has figured out how to get out of the in-app purchases on her own now for the most party. The app has a wide range of colours and it tells you the name of them as you select them. There’s also a magic wand that makes a melodious sound as it covers the canvas in a rainbow of colours.
Furry Friend
Price: Free
Devices: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch
Meet Lenord. He looks like he belongs on Sesame Street – perhaps this is why Miss O prefers him over the other similar apps such as Talking Tom or Talking Ben. He’s also far less irritating and he doesn’t fart. He comes with a variety of items you can give him but only two are included with the free app. Miss O has figured this out and no longer clicks on the items that don’t work for her.
