Is Balance a Myth?
100% honesty here. I’ve been sucking on the Healthy Habits front. I pulled my back several weeks ago, and I haven’t been able to bounce back from it. Every time I think I am okay, I try an activity that is just a little more strenuous and it acts up again. I have slipped back into some more of my comfortable old habits – like drinking coffee every morning, eat more sugar than I should, and getting too wrapped up in my work that I forget lunch.
I got to thinking about whether balance was a myth. Not in a zen-type of way, more of a I’m a strong, capable working mom type of way. The three most important topics: work, family, fun have to get equal footing. I have been successful in this, but it’s not without great effort on my part to make it happen. Here’s my 5 go to tips to get grounded and feel more in control of your world.
5 Tips to Get Grounded & Balanced
Get Moving
This might seem like the last thing you want to be doing in the tiredness you’re feeling. A little sweat is good for the body. It will help you clear out that brain fog, and pumps up your metabolism to burn calories all day long.
Write It Down
Every day before I go to bed, and before I leave work, I write down what I need to do the next things, or small things that are bothering me in my head. This allows me to clear out these nagging items and make way for creativity and letting my brain rest. If you’re having one of those late nights where you can’t get to sleep? Try writing it down.
Have a Conversation with a Trusted Friend
Some days the things that come out of my mouth when I’m talking to a trusted friend stagger me. They are those little thoughts in the back of your mind that you didn’t know were bothering you. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, pick up the phone or buy them a coffee and see if you can talk it through.
Take a Day Off
Take a day off, just leave the smartphone at home (or my favourite – in the console of the car). Pick a place you want to go (beach, trail, or park) and pick up lunch along the way. Put aside the guilt and camera – just play with your family and enjoy what comes. Giving ourselves the small spaces to relax & enjoy will remind you of the blessings you have.
Evaluate the Priorities
Feel like you’re on the hamster wheel and you just can’t get off? Feel like the life you have is not the one you want? Sit back and take a little time to look what what you like and don’t like about your current situation. The good news is, if you don’t like something – change it. If you don’t have enough time, stop watching TV. Do more things you love.
What things do you do everyday to help your balance?
a passionate recreation coordinator by day, crazy farm mama of two by night. i live outdoors: growing my own food, camping and hiking with my border collie with two active kids in tow. when I’m not writing, I’m experimenting with recipes, and crafts – or anything else that might keep the monkeys entertained.
